Recycle Our Lunch

My students need the manual on how to set up a composter along with the worms and composter in order to be able to recycle the food that is uneaten each day at lunch.

Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

"Be the change you want to see in the world," Mahatma Gandhi said, and my students will apply this to the way we think about waste. When we involve the youth in the process of change, there is a greater chance for sustainability. I see the world through the eyes of my students.

I am an early childhood teacher in Washington, DC.

My school services many students and families from the local community in addition to the families from the military base. 90% of the students are eligible for free and reduced lunch. Many children at my school would rather choose a sugary snack and turn down a healthy lunch. I would like to challenge them to see what happens to that food and engage them in a hands-on conversation about what could happen to that assumed waste.

My Project

The book "Worms Eat My Garbage" will explain and instruct the students about the composting process. The Worm Factory Malti tray composter along with the worms will give the students a change to see the various stages of garbage as it is broken down and transformed into useful products. The students will be in charge of their learning and begin to make healthy choices for themselves, which in turn will be healthy choices for their families. The students will be able to watch the process as the food and paper products are broken down and transformed into a useful product. As our school works to improve its garden, the bi-product of our efforts will directly effect the school garden allowing some of the youngest members of our school to participate in a huge school wide initiative.

We MUST empower our children and their families to understand the importance of recycling and making healthier choices for the longevity of the families.

With this small project, I know that it will grow into a community based garden that will be used to educate and nourish our community at large.
