Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Squeeeeeeak! Teaching recorder to elementary students can be a painful experience for your ears, but not when you've got the right resources. My students need books, CDs, and different recorders to help make learning the recorder a fun and easy experience.
I'm fortunate to work with about 500 brilliant, elementary students on a daily basis.
We go to a large urban school in a fairly low-income neighborhood. The vast majority of my students come from families where English is not their main medium for communication and yet they strive to excel in math and reading and many are fluent in both languages. Though my students come from a low SES background, they are innovative and creative, not letting boundaries stop them. Music gives my students an outlet to create and innovate and takes hold of their attention. Their eyes light up when they can take music making into their own hands and create something absolutely new.
My Project
My students in third, fourth, and fifth grade learn the soprano recorder every year and they LOVE IT! The recorder is a fun instrument for them because they can quickly learn new songs, melodies, and can take that music home! I have a few books and CDs that we use in our lessons but not nearly enough resources to satiate their growing love for the instrument and keep them reaching for new material. The resources I've asked for include a variety of books and print resources that will give me a ton of songs to choose from when I teach new notes and concepts. I've also asked for a few other sizes of recorder since my students only get the chance to learn the soprano recorder. Students can buy a soprano recorder from my district for $3 but an alto, tenor, or sopranino recorder costs too much for them (or for my school) to purchase. These instruments will give them something to work for and will also help them hear the recorder differently since these other instruments sound different.
These new instruments and books will expand our knowledge base and will give us new opportunities for growth.
New books will introduce songs and melodies that we've not been able to try before. New instruments will give us a platform to try those new songs in a different register and will teach us different sounds. Everything together will allow us to make new music and expand on the recorder skills that we've already been working on.
