“The time has come to consider biliteracy, the new threshold for literacy achievement in the new millennium. When this becomes a reality, Latino students and other bilinguals will be repositioned at the center of the curriculum rather than at the margins.l” (Reyes and Halcón, 2001).
My students are an energetic group of Spanish-dominant and English-dominant students that spend half of the day learning in Spanish and half of the day learning in English.
We are in a school that has two different learning strands: Dual Language Immersion and English only instruction. We serve a very diverse population with over 60 percent of students living in poverty; almost all of the students in my class make up part of that 60 percent. We are also unique in that minority cultures make up the majority of our school population.
My Project
These resources will be used for a semester long research project on the U.S. government. Students will read about the three branches of government and write an informative essay in Spanish. These resources will supplement our curriculum which has very little about U.S. government in Spanish. The writing station will be used to house all writing materials and the pens will be used to edit and revise their writing. Together, all these materials will enrich our writing block.
These donations will improve our classroom by providing more resources in Spanish.
We are lacking in Spanish materials to support our writing, so the texts will provide students with authentic books that convey important information about the U.S. government.
