Reading, Writing and Technology

My students need to be able to compete in the world of technology. Therefore I am requesting a Thrive Tablet computer to use for testing, reading groups and enrichment activities.

My Students

I currently teach an amazing group of 24 first graders. They are constantly asking questions, looking for new information and discovering their world. As their teacher I want to offer them the opportunity to read, write and discover. They need to be able to keep informed through technology.

The curriculum is a challenging one.

The 21st century is a challenging one. I am always trying to keep one step ahead of my students. We are mandated to give monthly assessments and have started a new reading program. Having the opportunity to use technology for reading and test taking skills will be a wonderful addition to my class. Our school is in an area where the funding is quite low. We rely on parents to help out with a lot of materials in our classes. There is very little left over for the extra technology we need just to keep current and up-to-date. Due to the fact that our budget is stretched as far as it can go, and our students are living in a technological world it is my hope that their needs are met. As a seasoned teacher I have seen the curriculum change several times. I fondly remember the days of film strip projectors and ditto machines. Those were considered modern in their day. It is time to really make my class modern.

My Project

There is nothing more exciting that watching a first grader learn how to read. There is nothing more exciting than guiding their fingers in the formation a letters as they write stories. Having a Toshiba Thrive to help them down their learning path will make it all the more exciting. It is my job to build a strong foundation as they move through their many years of education. With a tablet at my disposal I can meet the needs of all my students. Whether I create remedial assignments, enrichment activities or test taking skills the Toshiba Thrive will be an added, treasured resource. Of course books are still important in the hands of a child, but having the tablet as another tool will be just as important. I am educating children who will become adults in the year 2030. Who knows how far technology will advance by then. But it is my desire to help them get the right start right now.

We are a wonderful school.

Unfortunately we do not have any extra funding. While other schools have already had tablets in their classes, we haven't. It is very important that all children be given the same opportunities. The Thrive would enhance my reading program, my assessment techniques and the general information seeking skills of my students. I can't wait to see their faces when we receive this wonderful gift. It is important that my students have equal access to the curriculum.
