Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Help me to make math more concrete for my students and increase their love of reading at the same time! Mastering the basic facts is a hard task in first grade. I want to utilize their love for reading by providing books to serve as springboards into exciting hands-on math lessons.

The students in my first grade classroom are a melting pot of academic abilities, socio-economic backgrounds, and various nationalities.

However, they all have a least one important thing in common: they have a thirst for learning like no other! They enter into my classroom each morning very eager to learn something new and build on things they have already mastered. My students require hands-on lessons that will keep them engaged in the learning. Our school is a STEM school where problem solving is the one of our main focuses every day. My students have become great problem solvers and are always looking for new ways to solve the problems that they face. Using books to teach math will help in the process. We live in the world of electronic devices where problems can be solved instantly; however, it is my desire to equip my students with math strategies that will help my students solve basic math facts. I want my students to be prepared even when the latest technology is not available.

My Project

I want to capitalize on my students' love for books and reinforce the math skills they have learned at the same time. The supplies I have requested will help me to help my students tackle the hard concept of mastering the basic math facts in addition and subtraction. The students know how to use manipulatives to solve math problems; however, my students need to learn the basic facts with great fluency so that they are able to correctly solve any basic addition or subtraction fact quickly. Each book I have asked for will be used to teach strategies that can be used to make solving addition and subtraction problems easier for my students. I have also requested jumbo magnetic numbers. These numbers will allow my students to create and solve numbers sentences of their own. The Monkey Math Balance will be used to help my students understand the equivalency of numbers on each side of the equal sign. These supplies will help my students learn and practice math more efficiently.

Being able to add and subtract quickly is an important skill that serves as the foundation for all of other math operations in the future.

With your help, I will be able to use literature to teach my students more strategies to master these abstract concepts. You will have a part in helping many first grade students become more sufficient in math for many years to come. And as they learn these new strategies, they will have the footing and confidence they need to complete more complex problems.
