My students need to be exposed to quality writing. A magazine subscription provides weekly print that fosters not only reading, but conversation about the world today. They need 80 subscriptions to TIME For Kids.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work with some of the best students in one of the worst areas of the metroplex. Despite the daily challenges, I have kids who strive to make a better life for themselves when society says they statistically should fail. Providing a weekly taste of what the world has to offer can be life changing.
My incredible students come from incredible circumstances that many could not fathom living in or around.
Yet everyday, the majority of them come to school eager to learn and discover what the world has to offer. Our inner city public school serves a population where 96% qualify for free and reduce lunch, with the other 4% scared to fill out the paper work for fear of deportation. Many of our students come from a single parent home or are being raised by an extended family member. Most of our students are striving to be the first person in their family to attend and graduate college. Our students have goals and dreams just like students from affluent, surrounding areas...they just are in circumstances that are constantly knocking them down. With much perseverance, many of our students will be successful and helping them on that journey is my goal.
My Project
A subscription to Time for Kids provides my students with a weekly touch of current events. The majority of my students read well below grade level and this subscription will allow them to work on reading fluency and vocabulary in a way that does not make them feel like they are reading "baby" books. Not only does the subscription promote reading, they are also exposed to quality writing. The up to date topics also spark interest in creating meaningful conversations about events happening in the world today, not only helping English language learners work on their verbal skills, but also provides the opportunity for students to express their thoughts, opinions, and feelings about current events.
This project is extremely important to me, and more importantly for my students.
My job as an educator is to provide my students with as many opportunities to be exposed to quality print and writing that will allow them to soar as readers. My students do not live in print rich environments at home, so for me to be able to provide this opportunity for them at school is priceless.
