My students need a "Reading Orchard" that features a "tree & leaf" carpet and special storage shelf as that special place for learning letters, sounds and comprehension.
My Kindergarten class is made up of English Language Learners along with native speakers, all at different learning levels. My students love learning and enjoy using games and other activities to achieve new skills. By the end of Kindergarten, each diverse learner needs to be a strong reader!
These diverse students are bright, energetic and eager to learn.
Yet many are not only learning to adjust to the new world of Kindergarten and classroom standards, many of them are learning a new language and a new set of academic skills. These challenges inside the classroom are made even more difficult by challenges outside of the learning environment. Our school is a Title 1 school, where over half our population relies on free or reduced lunch. It is not uncommon for parents to have multiple jobs, irregular work hours, and other obstacles to overcome. As a result, these students need additional support to become fluent readers capable of comprehending what they read.
My Project
Among the tools and games that facilitate learning and reading achievement, students need a special spot all their own to explore letters, words, reading, and books. This space has to be a special place the children want to go to, where reading is an organized focus of that physical location. In that space, students find the learning engaging, challenging, and safe.
These Lakeshore Learning Materials provide just what we need. Lakeshore Learning provides a variety of alphabet books that will appeal to the diverse population we have in our school. Additionally, the Learning Materials kit provides an Alphabet Activities Pack, featuring games and activities using hands-on methods that students enjoy interacting with. Finally, and critically, the kit includes an organizing cubby and a welcoming carpet that becomes that special place to locate & engage in these activities, play the learning games, and the achieve the reading skills they require to begin their education in the First Grade.
This donation will help my students achieve the learning skills they require, regardless of their starting point, language challenges, and other factors outside the classroom.
Our mission, regardless of the skills our learners bring into the classroom, is to better ensure they begin their First Grade at the starting line, with a love reading and a confidence in their abilities as readers.
