My Students

"Be the change you want to see in the world," Mahatma Gandhi said, and my students apply this quote in my classroom and dream big every day. My students face many challenges and not having enough books for each student is one of them. I am hoping to change that challenge!

I teach in a very diverse setting.

We have students from many different backgrounds and countries learning together. While English is a second language to many, we also have our native speakers who face even greater challenges in our inner city setting. Class sizes are getting larger each year and with that comes less materials. I am hoping to continue to teach them to love reading with high interest books and this grant will allow me to update my current class sets of books as well as add the book "The Hunger Games" which my students will really be excited about!

My Project

I am hoping to ensure that each of my students will have their own copy of the novel we will be reading throughout the school year. My class size has grown by 15 students on average and now I need my class sets to increase as well. The books I'm choosing for this grant are high interest books that will engage my students and hopefully light a fire for a lifelong love of reading.

My students face so many challenges on a daily basis.

The pressures they face economically, at home, pressures from gangs as well as the typical pressures adolescents face. I want to create an environment where they feel special, taken care of, and each have a copy of the novel we are reading so they don't feel that even their educational setting is lacking. My students have the same potential as any, I just have to find a way to turn on a light amidst the clouds for them to see their dreams.
