Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Many of my students are brand new to the country and only beginning to learn the English language. If our classroom library is nicely organized with pictures showing what types of books are in the bin, then all students will have a hand in selecting books that interest them.
A typical day in our classroom begins with breakfast.
We then spend the next 4 hours working on reading and math skills. 4 straight hours of learning is difficult for an adult, let alone a child. I am constantly trying to find ways to break up the learning so students are engaged.
The students in my classroom consist of mostly special education students and English Language Learners. While this is their label, this is not just who they are. My students are kind, compassionate, and eager to learn. The materials we have available to us are not always culturally sensitive or interesting. Unfortunately, because of this, that desire to learn often lessens as the year goes on. My school is located in the city of Reading, which has been labeled the poorest city in the nation for its size.
My Project
My students need to improve their fluency and reading capability. With the Help-Yourself Book boxes, my students will have easy access to a variety of books. The resources I am requesting will be used to create a classroom library. It is my hope that a clean, bright, organized library will help to draw the students in and excite them about reading. With the book boxes, I will be able to put labels in multiple languages as well as pictures so my students are able to easily find books that interest them. I will also be able to create a reading area that students may go to as a special reward and incentive.
These items will improve my overall classroom environment. Resources will be at my students finger tips and will be set up in a way that is easily accessible to them. This will encourage my students to take an active role in their learning. It will also help to encourage their self esteem and reading goals.
The donation of these book boxes will impact my classroom by providing a bright and welcoming environment.
This will also allow easy access to reading materials and help to promote a love for reading.
