Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Every morning my students put up their backpacks and immediately grab a book to read. For thirty minutes the room is so quiet you could hear a pin drop. My second graders are reading for pleasure as they begin to develop a life-long love of reading.
My bright, energetic students attend a Title 1 school.
Most are on free lunch and don't always have books at home unless they are provided by our school. They are at an age when they are open to learning and find sharing what they have learned to be exciting and very rewarding. They write their ideas in journals and draw pictures of what they find interesting. They are beginning to grow as readers and writers.
My Project
I envision my students opening a new box of books with a great deal of enthusiasm and interest. The books I have requested are of high interest and on many reading levels. Some are funny, some are informative, and all are the types of books my students love. The books will be read, shared, and enjoyed by all.
A book is such a gift- a gift that keeps on giving.
Second grade is the time that a child can find new worlds in a book. It's such a positive experience for them. I want my students to remember second grade as a time when books became their friends.
