Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
A typical day in my classroom starts out with a morning meeting and then we proceed into Reader's Workshop. During Readers' Workshop we have an opening meeting, a work period and a closing meeting. During the work period the children work in reading/phonic centers. The children enjoy centers.
The population at our school is very mixed.
We have about 70-75% of the students on free and reduced lunch. Our school is a mixed population with a handful of upper class children and the majority of our students are from lower class families. Many children come to school with no school supplies. Many of the children come to school not knowing the alphabet or basic skills that they should of learned in pre-kindergarten. The majority of the children have not attended pre-kindergarten and kindergarten is their first school experience. Some of these children live in low income housing or in a shelter. The children are very sweet and very motivated to learn. Our curriculum is very intense and because the children do not have basic alphabetic skills they are already behind.
My Project
The beginning sounds match-up and the ending sounds match-up puzzles will help the children learn their beginning and ending sounds in words. The phonics magnetic word building boards will help the children learn to read short and long vowel words. The four-letter word building puzzles will be used to help students learn to read four letter words and also spell these words. The Tub O'Letters will help students spell words.
These materials that I am requesting will be used to develop reading/phonics centers that the students can work on during the work period of Readers' Workshop. These materials will help the students develop basic letter recognition skills, blending short and long vowel words together. They will enable the children to practice learning their sight words through the use of puzzles. The children will begin to learn basic reading and phonics skills through these centers. Students will view them as games that are being played to help them learn how to read.
These donations to my classroom will be greatly appreciated.
These center games will enable me to create more differentiated centers to meet the needs of my students. By differentiating my centers the students will learn how to read at their own pace. Students will develop confidence in being able to work in the centers and they will be motivated to continue improving their reading skills.
