My students need books for their afterschool book club to read, and discuss amongst themselves. I chose a variety of genres to encourage them to explore different books.
Do you remember your favorite book and why? My students need to have opportunities to explore books, be part of a club, increase reading skills, and be able to go on adventures in their minds by reading instead of video games. They need to increase their social skills and be able to discuss books.
These wonderful students come to school daily to learn, make friends, feel safe, and strengthen their self confidence and abilities to be anything they want to be.
Our student population is diverse. Our neighborhood school is a supportive, current on standards and uses best practices for kids, giving, and a welcoming environment to all who enter our doors. We have our challenges like any school, but our neighborhood struggles economically in many ways. Unfortunately, our students struggle then too when they come to school. Our students want to strive to be their best and are encouraged daily by many adults in the building to make good choices and work to their best ability. We recently received the one of the highest honors of Positive Behavior Intervention Support acknowledgment. Our students work everyday to understand, empathize, treat others respectfully, and accept differences in our school and community. Our neighborhood school is full of a variety of learners and teachers
My Project
My students have the opportunity to join an afterschool club to read a variety of books. Afterschool clubs are few and far between in our school. We meet every three weeks as a group. The books are given to students who sign up. There is a maximum of 15 students. We invite parents to attend and read with their child. We have many parents come with their child. Each student has the opportunity to mediate the book club session and ask questions to engage others in conversation surrounded by the book. We meet for an 1 -1 1/2 hours depending on how rich the discussion is. Then the group picks out a new book to read for next time. Many students read their book club book during independent reading time in class and discussions arise even before club night! I love it! It is a healthy way to encourage reading, comprehension, fluency, friendships, family involvement and the love of reading. We had parents request we do this club again this year. However, the funds are not there.
The donations for this project will fund an afterschool club for the year that focuses on increasing students reading skills and family involvement.
It will help my students increase their stamina, reading level, comprehension, and fluency. On top of all that, it will increase self confidence, parent/ child relationships, communication skills, friendships, and the love of reading. Hopefully, they will find their favorite book to remember when they are an adult. We also serve pizza and drinks.
