Reading Adventures on the Magic Carpet

My students need a new 'Magic Carpet' to sit on as they are taken away on their reading adventures.

My Students

Have you ever seen the wide-eyed wonder of children as they are read aloud to and taken away on reading adventures? As children are invited to the "Magic Carpet", they are able to have a special place where they can gather and be immersed in great literature that gets them excited about reading.

As a literacy specialist, I work with at-risk children who are struggling with early literacy skills.

I work in a public school building that houses not only general education classrooms, but integrated and small classes that accommodate children with special needs. Some students have underlying issues such as dyslexic tendencies,ADHD and Autism Spectrum disorders. It is my privilege to introduce them to the wonderful world of books where they can become immersed in good literature. Through good literature children are able to become engaged and learn essential skills and concepts that will help them develop lifelong skills.

My Project

By asking children to come to the "Magic Carpet", they are automatically curious about what will take place. By providing a colorful and inviting space where children can gather, I am able to grab the attention of those students who may not have the ability to remain in a seat around a table or learn in a "traditional" way. By waving my magic wand over them as they sit on their "Magic Carpet", they become focused on the book and activity that they are about to embark on. The addition of letters and numerals on this carpet will add an extra instructional dimension as students who struggle with letter/numeral identification or letter sounds will have a resource that they can refer to as they sit on the "Magic Carpet". This "Magic Carpet" will help in creating a magical space in my classroom where all children will have the opportunity to become excited about literacy.

This "Magic Carpet" will be used each and every day by students who need that little extra motivation to learn. This donation will go a very long way in exciting children about literacy and providing a very special place where they will have the opportunity to have reading "take them away".
