Readers of Distinction- Book Club

My students need a projector in order to incorporate technology into our learning. We're in a trailer and share a laptop. A projector would allow us all to see the screen.

My Students

Can you imagine not having access to the Internet or even a computer? Well that is the reality for many of the students that I teach.

The majority of students that I teach live below the poverty line and do not have Internet access at home.

It is very unfortunate that these wonderful and enthusiastic children do not have the opportunities that most children have, due to their level of poverty. I teach in a public school, which has a huge number (95%) of students receiving free or reduced lunch. Our school is overcrowded, which has forced us to have our classroom outside in a trailer. Being that we are outside of the building, our classroom does not have computers or technology. However, we do have a teacher laptop that we share. Our situation has taught us to improvise and make do with what we have. I believe that I'd be able to better teach my students if I were able to connect my laptop to a projector so that we could all view what is on the monitor comfortably. There are many educational websites that I have access to, however it is hard to use them because of our lack of computers and or projector.

My Project

If we had a projector in our trailer, my teaching, and their learning could become enhanced in a multitude of ways. One such way, would be by connecting my laptop to the projector so that we could all view various educational segments through streaming videos. It would also assist us by allowing them to play interactive educational games. The interactivity, will make learning "fun", causing the lessons to be better received by the students. Another way that the projector would benefit us is by allowing the students to share in the opportunities of using the Internet to read and conduct research as a group. These group activities will greatly benefit elementary students with their social skills. We can incorporate the use of a white dry erase board, along with the projector giving the students a platform to write on, making it more usable for the students.

The funding of this project will make a huge impact on the learning of the students in this class.

The use of the projector will allow students to cross the bridge of the digital divide. We'll be able to gain access to the Internet and infuse the use of multi-media technology into our class and into our studies. Learning will be increased by allowing students to view video and hear audio. We'll be able to compare books to their video counterparts. The benefits of having a projector are vast.
