Readers Are Leaders: Our Classroom Library Needs a Makeover
My students need 2 book shelves that allow them to reach books, 30 lower level-high interest books, and baskets to store them to improve our classroom library.
"Today a reader, tomorrow a leader."-Margaret Fuller
I value the message of this quote so much that I have it on one of the walls in my classroom. It is a powerful reminder for me, as I'm charged with teaching my kinder kids how to read. It encourages my kids to become readers who read with purpose.
I have the pleasure of working with 23 sweet, energetic, and curious 5 and 6 year old kindergarten students in South Carolina.
For many of my students, my classroom serves as their first academic experience away from home. My kids come to me with varied backgrounds, interests, and ability levels. Despite these differences, they work hard to please others, and they are naturally enthusiastic about learning. I am charged with meeting all of their needs, social, emotional, physical, and academic, while challenging them to reach their full potential for success.
My Project
The materials that I am requesting will help instill a life-long love for reading in my students. Kindergarten is the grade that many students decide whether they like or dislike school/reading/etc., because of first experiences. It is my hope that every child who enters my classroom, leaves with a love for school and reading! I will use these 2 bookshelves to make our classroom library more inviting and easier for my kids to use. I will sort our classroom books by topic/author and store them in the 12 book baskets. The baskets will be labeled with pictures and words, making it easy for my kids to find what they are looking for. These baskets will be stored on the bookshelves, which are at the perfect level for my kids to reach. I am excited to include 30 new high interests-low level books in our classroom library for our students to read. It is difficult to find books that are easy enough for my kids to read, but also books they would choose to read. These sets allow me to do that.
Creating life-long readers is one of the most important parts of my job, second only to keeping my kids safe.
I have the power to make a difference in my students' lives, and I don't take this responsibility lightly. I must provide these needed materials so that my students will develop a life-long desire to read and learn.
