Daily, I have the pleasure of developing a passion for readers from K-8th and APOLLO (Autism). My day consists of a constant rotation of teaching library and literacy lessons to our students. Our staff also models the importance of reading, by engaging in reading competitions with our students.
We are a rural school in southern Arizona.
Our population is about 70% Title 1 (Free and Reduced Lunch), out of our approximate 1,000 enrolled students. We are in our second year as a Leader in Me school, whereas our focus is "Growing Leaders, Kids First." The kids are caring, kind, and thankful for the learning experiences and opportunities that are offered to them. They are avid readers, whereas our site is the leader and model for other sites, for both words read and comprehension success rate.
My Project
The students will use these tablets to enhance their literacy skills by reading and listening to electronic books. They will be able to read individually, as well as with their reading buddies. As a K-8 school, our middle school students pair up with the younger students to assist them with their literacy, while modeling positive academic relationships.
We are extremely grateful to those who sponsored our initial request of 12 Kindle Fire tablets!
We received word that others would like to have the opportunity to make a significant impact for our students in maintaining and gaining literacy skills. Students will utilize the Kindle devices individually, as well as during buddy reading. We would like to further bridge the gap between printed and electronic materials by increasing our technology and enhancing our Media Center.
