My students need engaging non-fiction books in Spanish that push them to expand their vocabulary, content and comprehension learning beyond grade level.
Being bilingual and bi-literate in today's world is an invaluable skill, and our students have been well on their way since kindergarten.
Some speak Spanish and others speak English at home, but all come to school to learn in both English and Spanish at our dual language program.
Our students are readers.
From day one in our K-2 campus, they are taught to see themselves as readers who can build their own learning through exploration of books, and for Spanish-dominant and English-dominant students alike, reading is a means to build language and communication skills. Our kids come from different linguistic, cultural, socioeconomic, and national backgrounds--and they happily learn side-by-side irrelevant of society's prejudices.
They spend the majority of their day learning in Spanish and each year add on more time in English. Bolstering our Spanish library will continue to elevate the status of the Spanish language and Hispanic culture among our students.
My Project
An important part of our students' day is the guided reading block, where students have the opportunity to work in small groups with teachers developing reading skills at their level. Many of our students are already reading beyond mastery at the second grade level. While our book room is flush with books at the early reading levels, for second graders reading at and above grade level, the selection is thin. Bolstering our Spanish library with higher-level literature will continue to elevate the status of the Spanish language and Hispanic culture among our students and provide all advanced readers with engaging books.
With this infusion of 39 new non-fiction titles at and above the second-grade level, we will meet the needs of our students who are already excelling and push them to meet their full potential.
Our curious, spirited second-grade readers will relish the opportunity to learn about science, technology, and important figures of the past and present with these challenging texts.
Your donation will support our diverse students develop their identities as lifelong bilingual learners.
