Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My incoming 8th graders are neighborhood kids who enjoy coming to school and not leaving...we have 97% attendance. I met the Class of 2016 just as my Class of 2015 was graduating and the majority said...."We heard that you love books. So do we!" High Five for me!
My kids come from broken homes and parents who are struggling to make ends meet.
Because we are located in a neighborhood where two notorious gangs reside, many of my kids are not allowed to come out for fear of getting hit by a bullet. So, many of my kids stay in doors and not all have video games...can't afford them.
My Project
Books are something my kids can easily carry and enjoy while being indoors. What a great way to keep my kids safe than by having them snuggle up with some great books while indoors, safe from the violence and bullets outside their windows. Their parents can't afford to always buy them books but if I can, all win here.
I grew up with a love for reading...my single parent Mother always read to us, and what better way for me then to continue to instill a love for reading to my 8th graders and hopefully, make them life-long readers.
