My Students

"It is only through change that we grow." This is quote that inspires me in my classroom. My students are from homes that do not promote literacy success. Because of this I feel that I am duty bound to change the course of their development. I have a responsibility to create the ideal classroom.

My students are 100% minority, immigrant and second language learners.

We are a title one school and more than 75% of my students receive free or reduced lunch. Our school is a large school ( over 700 students) in a urban district in Texas. Our school has an active PTO, but because most of our parents are low income, they do not have the resources to provide what the teachers cannot afford to buy. My students are motivated learners and have high attendance rates. They deserve the best that I can provide.

My Project

Right now, the teachers in our building are restricted from using the traditional materials: tape, tacks or putty, etc, to post our materials on the walls. In first grade, a print rich environment is critical to language development. The pocket charts I have requested will allow me to use 3M strips to post the charts. I can use the charts to post the word lists, Venn diagrams, column charts, sentences and anchor lessons that my students need to be able to visualize their learning. They will then use the "walls as references." I will be able to clearly define topics and areas of development for my students. They will have the print rich environment that is critical to language development, and I will be able to update it daily without destroying the walls of our new classroom. We will be able to "Read the Room" everyday.

This project is important because it will allow me to create an appropriate classroom environment for Literacy, Math, Science and social studies.

I will be able to follow the district policies and still provide my students with a classroom that supports their development.
