We have a quote in our classroom - "Learn from the past, live for the present, plan for the future." By bringing history alive, I hope my students will learn from the past and be prepared for the future.
My students are a mix of bright, enthusiastic learners to untapped potential that is waiting for a spark to ignite their learning.
We are located in a rural area where the economy has definitely taken a downturn and has yet to recover. For the past few years, our school district has had to continually cut every extra cent to keep what we currently have for students. Because of our remote location, students often have little exposure to the bigger world and issues that affect it.
My Project
I am requesting 65 copies of the book "First They Killed My Father: A Daughter of Cambodia Remembers" to bring world history to life. We have very few extra resources in our classroom to bring world history alive. My students will be able to read individually, together as a class and work on writing assignments with this book. As we learn about governments around the world, wars of the 20th century, and the Cold War in the US, students will be able to feel the impact on ordinary families. As we work on social studies writing work samples, this book will be a great opportunity for students to continue improving on analyzing data, making interpretations, and drawing conclusions. Students have a misconception that history is about memorizing dates and locations, but they become enthused when they realize it is about people just like them that live through significant events. I am excited to bring this resource to my class and hope it will make an impact on their lives.
Textbooks are fine, class notes are okay, but being drawn into a historical even, to the point that you feel like you are living and watching it happen is magical.
I want students to be able to go on that journey through this book. It will touch their hearts and their lives. Not only will they understand important events from a world history aspect, but I believe they will be inspired to help others and have compassion for fellow children regardless of who they are.
