My students need webcams and headsets to interact with students from around the world.

"Responsible Global Citizens". That is the goal that my students are aiming for as they explore their world. My students study Spanish levels 1-4 and seek opportunities to improve and expand their learning by speaking with people who speak the Spanish language.
My students come from various backgrounds but typically lack the resources to expand and improve their learning opportunities.
They are eager to learn new things even if they don't always say it. The community they live in is fairly insular and does not give them chances to venture out into the world to interact with other people from other countries. They need these experiences to help change their view of the world and to create an energy and desire to find out what they are missing. Our computer lab is not equipped to support interactions across the Internet with students from other countries. Thus, my students are missing out on invaluable practice for their Spanish speaking skills.
In order to gain the full experience of speaking in Spanish my students must have chances to interact with native speakers. Through a new program called WeSpeke.com we are able to do that but don't have any hardware to begin the process. My students will use these webcams and headsets to plug into the world of Spanish speakers and interact with students from around the globe. They will have the chance to talk to students of their own age about a variety of topics and experiences. WeSpeke connects them to the world and the webcams and headsets give them the tools to begin a lifelong journey of exploring the world and becoming repsonsible global citizens. My hope is that they take away a true appreciation of the vastness of ideas and perspectives that are out there in the world. I hope they find a love for speaking the Spanish language that extends beyond the classroom and inevitably adds depth to their life.
Any student can learn from a book.
Any student can take quizzes and tests. Any student can get grades and pass classes. Not all students can gain life experiences that can only be procured through a one-on-one connection with someone from another culture. The webcams and headsets will allow for them to venture out into the world and do just that. I see this project giving my students skills and experience for creating a lifelong love and understanding of the Spanish language and culture.
