My students need low level high interest books in order to promote a love of reading and help improve overall literacy. These titles include "The Fault in Our Stars," the Divergent Series.
In a typical day in the Resource Room students will come in and out in order to get help with assignments, take a test, take a reading break or to simply tell me how their day is going. My students are bright and curious about the world, and when they find books they love they devour them.
I teach students with learning disabilities and ADHD who deeply want to succeed and learn.
Reading hasn't always been easy for my students and they yearn to discover books they both enjoy and can understand. My school serves low income students of color. Over 80% of my school is on free and reduced lunch.
My Project
At least three times a week students have time to simply read for pleasure. Many students do not have books in their homes and need to be introduced to books that pique their interest while still being at their reading level. My students will read these books for fun with the hope that they will fall in love with reading.
This project will provide them with an escape to new people and other worlds.
It will enable them to reflect upon their own experiences as they read about how others deal with their problems. It will help them grow their literacy skills while broadening their horizons.
