My students need 2 iPod touch devices to use as QR code scanners and book sets (A Single Shard, The Van Gogh Cafe, and A Wrinkle in Time) to use for interactive reading.
Better than an eReader! After "experimenting" I integrated QR codes into books so that students can scan a code while reading to get a thought provoking question about the text. This experience is taking reading and thinking to a whole new level. With text sets students can borrow books too.
I work with gifted students who are constantly asking me for more and more and more!
They love any thinking challenge I give to them and can't seem to get enough! They are thirsty for information and challenge. While I only get to see them for 1 hour each day, I try hard to provide them with learning that transcends our time together.
My Project
Embracing the digital age we live in, I want students to combine their expanding technical knowledge while still clinging to reading roots and traditions. My project puts great literature in their hands for that authentic page turning experience while allowing them to integrate technology to stimulate and extend. Here's how it works: I put specially created QR codes into selected texts. While reading a student can scan a code for a question to stretch their thinking about the text. They can choose to answer the question digitally (by entering the answer on the blog link) or if they have taken the book home, can discuss with a parent. The iPod touch devices will allow students to interact with the books at school using a free QR code reader app.
This project will continue to encourage and inspire reading while stimulating higher level thinking skills.
It will also help students apply digital skills with technology to prepare them for the future.
