Thanks Skype! for giving students this opportunity to acquire 21st century technology that enables them to connect (and later compete) with learners from around the world.

Hola and welcome to my proposal for iPod Touches for curious, earnest, and eager first graders among whom five languages are spoken at home in a high poverty school in a district that cut all elementary music, P.E., art, and computer teachers in a state that is #1 in prison spending and #47 in education spending.

My Project

Weekly, my students learn about, discuss, and write an opinion piece about a current event. Recently, we learned about three children who were safely picked up and dropped by a tornado. With Skype on the requested 4 iPod Touches, my students will be able to deepen their understanding of events like tornadoes by chatting via Skype with their peers who have experienced tornadoes. Other subjects we have discussed are life on the space station (How do they go to the bathroom?), should spanking be outlawed, and how does one earn a "Make A Difference" award. Enthusiastic, inquisitive, and opinionated students will be able to hold Q and A's, share their views, and deliver reports on their experiences. Even a 7 year old can become a video journalist with the right technology.
