Providing Communication for Student with Special Needs
My students need apps to participate in classroom activities because their delayed language skills typically prevent it, though they are cognitively capable.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Nothing breaks my heart more than seeing students frustrated by their inability to communicate with those around them. Some students with special needs are cognitively capable of participating in classroom discussion and self expression though their language delays would make other think otherwise.
I teach a transitional kindergarten through second grade class for students with Autism at a public school in the Watts area of Los Angeles, CA.
The students are from low-income families and they do not have the access or advantages of other children. Given their special needs and their difficult community background these students’ needs are greater than usual. The students are proud to be multicultural and bilingual. They are excited about school and eager to learn each day. My goal is to empower them with the knowledge and confidence that they can learn and succeed despite the many challenges they face.
My Project
I am requesting funding for multiple Alternative/Augmentative Communication systems (AAC) to support approximately 40 to students with special needs in 4 classrooms: 2 pre-school for all learners (PAL), 1 pre-school comprehensive (PSC) (moderate to severe autism) and 1 TK-2nd Autism-Core Curriculum. These systems will allow students that are cognitively able to access classroom activities to participate when their language skills typically prevent them from involvement. We will work with the school’s Speech and Language Pathologist to customize the students’ user files to meet their specific needs. As the students’ skills and language grows the team may change the user file to continue their growth. It’s important to note that AAC has been proven to support growth of oral language skills. So, though the students will use these systems to communicate; it is also teaching them to expand their use of oral language.
Help me eliminate some of the frustrations our students feel due to their difficulties in communication.
Help provide them great access to the classroom and school community. Help others see what their language skills hide.
