Since adult media assistant jobs were cut in my school system, I have come to rely more heavily on my student media assistants. They are a creative and motivated group of middle school students who enjoy creating attractive bulletin boards and displays in the media center.
My school is located in a rural area of North Carolina.
Our current enrollment is just under 400 students in grades 6-8. Around 50% of our students qualify for either free or reduced lunch. With the families of our students struggling to make ends meet, it is a challenge for our school to raise money through fundraisers. With family and school budgets stretched to the limits, funds are difficult to come by.
My Project
My student media assistants will be able to use the Cricut Expression 1 cutting machine to help create attractive bulletin boards and book displays for the media center. The purpose of these displays will be to entice more students to visit the media center and make full use of its resources.
Our Jr. Beta Club students will be able to use the Cricut to participate in competitions at the state Jr. Beta Club convention. It will be extremely helpful in the Scrapbook, Spotlight Your Club, Banner, Wreath, and Living Literature competitions.
Other clubs and organizations can use the Cricut to advertise their activities and projects with pizazz. Boring and often ignored posters will be more noticeable.
The teachers at my school can use the Cricut, also. An important part of creating a positive school experience involves making the school look attractive and welcoming.
These examples are really the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the usefulness of this resource in a school setting.
The Cricut Expression 1 will provide my students with an additional creative outlet.
These students will take pride and ownership in projects displayed around the school because they had a hand in creating them. Students will get to experience what it is like to create a professional-looking product.
