In our school's engineering program, my students love learning about new technologies. They're always looking to put the problem-solving skills they're learning to the test. But a lot of them, girls especially, don't have access to the tech they want to learn about at home.
My 6th to 8th graders have a passion for technology.
They have a wide range of skill levels, but every single one of them has worked hard to contribute something to every project we've done in the past, from programming to racing Lego cars. At the beginning of the year, I asked them what technology the students would be most interested in learning about, and their first choice was 3D Printing. They've spent the year working to get approval from the school for the project, and finally received it. I want to give them the chance to see their work come to fruition, and to introduce them to a technology that will be vitally important as they grow up.
My Project
The students will be using the printer to learn about 3D modeling, design, and troubleshooting. In groups, they'll create digital 3D designs using Sketchup, along with critiquing and assisting with other's designs. The best designs will get printed . The students will research the different filaments, and the necessary steps to bring a digital design into reality. Finally, the students will be able to present to their classmates what they've learned, or even present their creations to other schools in the district next year.
Because 3D printing is such a fast growing technology, I hope my students will use the information they learn in their futures as makers and students.
3D Printers are just one step in a race toward the future, and I want my students to be inspired to live in a world where anyone can bring their ideas into reality.
