Prevent Summer Learning Loss in the South Bronx!

My students need this collection of 75 books to read so that they can continue their reading development at home this summer.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine working hard all year school long to reach a goal, only to have the impact of your work wiped out during the summer months due to a lack of resources. This scenario happens in schools each year, and it is likely to happen this year without your help.

I work at an all-girls' charter school in the South Bronx.

My students are bright and motivated girls who are passionate about learning and especially love reading. As a result of our students' hard work and the effort of many dedicated teachers, the overwhelming majority of students in third grade are reading at or above grade level - a noteworthy achievement in an area known more for its challenges with crime and drugs than access to great schools. However, the summer is quickly approaching, and most of our students will have very limited access to books that will both engage them and keep them challenged. Studies have clearly shown that students from lower-income areas who have reduced access to books over the summer typically lose three or more months of reading ability during the summer. Over time, this summer learning loss can account for a huge percentage of the gap between students from low-income areas and their peers from more economically advantaged families.

My Project

The stakes are particularly high for our most struggling readers. Several of my students who received intense reading intervention throughout second grade were able to make their end-of-the-year goals only to slide back almost a full year of growth over the course of the summer. These students need to be reading consistently over the summer so that they can maintain or improve their current reading abilities. Reading just 4 to 5 books over the summer can help eliminate this gap - and you can help! The collection of books chosen for this proposal includes 3 books for each of my students based on their reading level and their interests, for a total of 75 books. This selection includes books in some of our students' favorite series, including Judy Moody and Amber Brown. My hope is that these high-interest books will encourage students to continue their reading during the summer and that they will return to school in September ready to continue where they left off in June.

After a year of hard work by students and teachers alike, it would be heartbreaking to have our students slide so far backwards because of limited access to books they enjoy reading.

Please help us prevent summer learning loss from affecting our girls' educational achievement! Thank you so much for considering our school!
