This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Every morning I ask my students the same question. "Are you prepared to be successful today?" I am checking for two things. First, if they have all of their materials. Secondly, and more importantly, I am checking in to see where they are at emotionally that given morning.
My classroom is a home base for students with Autism Spectrum Disorders, Emotional Disturbances, and ADHD.
They struggle staying organized and emotionally handling difficult situations. They check in with me several times a day. They see me first thing in the morning and right before they head to the bus. We work daily on staying organized, being prepared for class, and managing our emotions. These students are sent to me throughout their day to calm down, discuss problem behaviors, or just to work on classroom assignments.
A large majority of my school's student population is on free and reduced lunch and most of my students do not have the basic school supplies they need to be successful. Our district is also dealing with increased budget cuts and resources for extra materials is very limited at this time.
My Project
The basic school supplies in this project such as the pens, tape and dispenser, scissors, expo markers, and pencil sharpener will be used on a daily basis. These supplies allow me to have a stockpile of materials that can be allocated out when a student is in need. The two bean bag chairs will be used when students come to my classroom upset or frustrated. Creating this safe place for my students is key in building and maintaining relationships with them. They know that when they come to my room upset, I will allow them time to calm down before asking them to discuss what happened with me. These chairs will allow a place to be established in my room for this processing time. I also envision them being used during free time for students to relax and read a book and work on homework.
If this project is funded it will improve my classroom exponentially.
I will not have to worry about running out of the basic materials my students need to be successful, and it will provide my classroom with two bean bag chairs that will make it more inviting and comfortable. Thank you for your time and consideration!
