I teach Music at Homeland Park Elementary School in Anderson, South Carolina. We are a title 1 school with an 86% poverty rating. We have approximately 350 students in grades K-5 with most of those receiving free or reduced lunch.
I am new to the school this year and have fallen in love with the children. Being a music teacher allows me to get to know the children on a different level than the classroom teacher.
For the past several years, the music teacher was on a portable cart, traveling from classroom to classroom without an actual "home". We were fortunate this year to receive a portable trailer, which allows the students to come to the music classroom and gain more interaction with instruments, singing, movements and creating. With that being said, our classroom is lacking in a few items.
One major item(s) we would love to have are portable flipform risers. These risers take on three basic shapes and would be extremely beneficial in the classroom. I would like to have four risers; one in each color of red, blue, yellow and green. The students would use these risers as seats in the music classroom, as well as risers during performances. The risers are color coordinated which would allow me to separate the children by colors in order to determine computer time, instrument time, etc. Each riser will hold 8 smaller children and 6 larger children sitting down. Standing, they will hold 12 students.
These risers would benefit the students with the ability to see the board better, organization and overall discipline in the classroom. Currently we are in regular chairs, which can make it difficult for students to see the board. The chairs are close to each other and when we perform a dance, we lose valuable classroom time moving furniture.
Being in a low income, high poverty school, our students sometimes aren't afforded the luxury of new, top of the line equipment. Although our children are poor, they are still children. I feel like they deserve the best of what we can offer. All of our students, K-5, would have the benefit of using these risers. Thank you for taking the time to read my proposal.
