Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Physical activity is slowly fading for our children. They sit for the majority of the time while at school, and end up doing the same at home. As a K-6 physical education teacher, my goal is to get the students moving. I want to instill in them a desire to move and play physically for good health.
I teach in a low SES area.
Most of our students have parents that are both working, or they live in a single parent home where they hardly see their parent. We also have many foster students at our school. The children enjoy learning new things and participating in new activities. For some, however, they cannot afford to be involved in extra curricular activities that require payment. That means their only activity time occurs at school.
My Project
Rather than coming to PE class for only 50 minutes a week and having to wait in line to be able to take their turn to throw a ball or try to kick a goal, having more equipment will allow all students to be active for the majority of the time. Students work together in squads during PE. Each class has 6 squads. Currently we have to double up to share equipment, but having a sufficient amount of soccer balls, footballs, basketballs, etc. will enable the students to build stronger bonds with their teammates and allow them to have more opportunity during class to participate and learn the new skills for each activity.
My students will benefit from new equipment during their physical education classes.
Unfortunately, they only attend PE one day a week for 50 minutes. I am teaching the students when they come to class, games that they can play with each other during recess before school and at lunch. In order to have sufficient equipment for my PE classes and students to use during their recess, we need these materials. Students are a member of a squad in PE class, and they use teamwork and cooperation to successfully participate in activities. Not only are they being active in PE, but they are learning valuable lifeskills. Having sufficient equipment is critical in making this happen.
