Play Therapy for Traumatized Children

My students need games, books, puppets, and a sand tray to enhance their social and emotional development.

My Students

Do you remember your first imaginative friend that felt like a life-like person? The children I help cannot understand the feelings they have towards the trauma in their lives. My request for these items will allow me to use imaginative play therapy to help children understand their feelings.

I am a K-5 public school counselor in Ohio with low income school families.

Twenty percent of the students are economically disadvantaged. My students experience many forms of trauma in their lives, such as parents who are incarcerated, the shooting of a loved one, the absence of a father or mother, divorced parents, and neglect and abuse, to name a few. Many of the students are unsure of how to express their feelings and emotions, which results in behavior problems, low self-esteem issues, & academic difficulties.

My Project

I am requesting a variety of play therapy toys. To help my students overcome the trauma in their lives, I would like therapy toys to help them re-adjust, focus, and accept their feelings. The handpuppets I am requesting will allow my students to play imaginatively. They will be able to reflect on their life before the trauma, and how it has changed since. My sand tray will allow for the same type of play. I have also requested conversation cubes to encourage conversation with timid, shy students. Many students are afraid to admit their trauma, and these cubes will allow me to break the ice and encourage their conversation. Lastly, I am requesting a social skills game to teach my students how to communicate properly. Many of my students do not have the support or skills to speak about their traumatic experience. This game will allow me to teach my students language and feeling words through play therapy.

By making a donation to my request, the lives of many traumatized children will be changed!

They will be able to acknowledge and reflect on their true feelings, and engage in imaginative play. They will learn to communicate better, acknowledge their feelings, and heal. The supplies that I am requesting will allow my students to value their life, despite their circumstances. In addition, they will also be able to accept themselves for who they are.
