My students love to read, but need new genres to stretch their reading skills. We have a few graphic novels and many of my more reluctant readers have worn them out! They enjoy this genre in particular because the illustrations and comic style of graphic novels helps them with text comprehension.
The Cove, as we refer to our classroom, is filled with 23 wonderful 5th grade students.
Our school is high poverty, with over 60% of our families qualifying for free or reduced lunch. Many of my students do not have books at home and rely on our classroom library to grow their love of reading. Our small elementary school is very rural, but our students have a BIG desire to explore the world through their reading and other learning adventures.
My Project
In our classroom, we engage in Reader's Workshop. My students choose books they would like to read and practice various comprehension and other literacy skills through these self-selected books. The graphic novel set would really meet the needs of many of my students who enjoy reading comics, and need to learn more complex literacy skills. The graphic novels would combine the best of both worlds for them! I envision many interesting conferences and small group discussions surrounding the fascinating story lines contained in these novels. I also envision my students feeling success and a desire to go grab another!
Being able to add a collection of 30 graphic novels to our classroom library would open the door for many of my reluctant readers.
Many of my students' reading lives would be enhanced by providing this assortment of books with a genre that is becoming more and more popular!
