Do you remember your teachers lecturing you about how special you are? Me neither. Do you remember reading that book that made you feel special? Well, that's because books appeal to readers of all ages! (Besides, no one likes being lectured anyway.)
Students here are just like children everywhere - they enjoy having fun, making friends, learning and being themselves.
The staff and I want them to stay that way - while helping them develop a love of learning and reading.
With many coming from an impoverished background, some students are raised by their extended family because their parents need to work many, often late, hours to support the household. Thus, families often turn to the school and classrooms to provide eye-opening experiences and to help them grow socially and emotionally. These stories help children envision important values and skills to have throughout life. Besides, authors are much better story-tellers than I am!
My Project
The books here were books that made me smile, laugh, and think "I have to read this to the kids!" My students love being read to, having that personal time and connection with adults and classmates, and spending quality time being surrounded by great books. Fantastic literature helps children remember to value themselves, appreciate diversity and understand social etiquette.
Through read alouds, discussions and modeling, students will learn to internalize the important messages written between the lines: It's okay to be unique; Dream and have courage to chase after your dreams; Dare to be imaginative; Be kind; Know that someone cares about you.
In addition to providing students with opportunities to imagine, to practice kindness, and to value themselves, books will help illuminate these ideals we want children to grow up with.
I see a huge difference between the older and younger kids at school. Kindergarteners aren't afraid to be unique, to be different, to have different ideas. However, third graders always want to conform, to have similar thoughts. Let's encourage them to be outstanding thinkers!
