This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
This will be the first year for my school that third grade will be departmentalized. I will be the math teacher for the entire grade. It's a daunting task but one that I am excited about because I hope to impart my passion for math to my students.
There are three classes on the grade and each class has approximately 25 students.
My school is in a small district with a very diverse population, therefore I have students of various ethnicity. One of the things I enjoy about the school, the students and the community, is the closeness. Most students have siblings in other grades and students live close to each other so they are friends outside of school also.
It's a positive learning community where students just need enough of the right resources to reach their true potential.
My Project
As we embrace the common core standards, the focus is on making real-world connections in our math lessons. What better way to do that for elementary kids, but with picture books? The books that I have selected were researched and recommended by teachers across the country. I acquired a lot of my information from scholastics.com, a highly recognized educational website.
Besides the element of real-world connections, picture books are also a great way to introduce math concepts to students who might not otherwise be interested or have fears about the subject.
Then there is the need to integrate math with reading. Students need more exposure to literature even in math class.
I have requested two books each for some of the major math concepts. I will begin those units with a read aloud to get students engaged and interested. Having an extra copy will allow for small groups and partner reading.
We are at a time both nationally and globally when math, science and technology are the critical needs.
If I can use one picture book: to engage just one student, to create and develop a love for math, or to show students how what they are doing in math in third grade will be relevant to their lives in the future.
