Photo Finish

My students need 1 ink cartridge, 2 packs of photo paper, 1 pack of drawing paper, and 1 pack of pencils to learn how to use different values (dark and light shades) in drawing self portraits from black and white photographs.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

In meeting one of the basic skills (and a state standard for improving drawing skills), my students will use my digital camera to take black and white photos of each others' faces, cut the photos in half and draw the missing half matching the values of the photograph. We need your help in getting supplies for this project.

My students are from a poor, inner city school with few resources for Art.

The school is from the 60's and the population consists of mostly recent immigrants with limited English language skills. Art is one of the few areas where language is less of a barrier and what better subject for the students to practice drawing than themselves. I hear my students talk about the lack of resources at my school and they are convinced they are second class citizens getting a second class education. Sadly, to some extent this is true.

My Project

There is a great deal of talent lying untapped in my students. By teaching my students how better to see what is in the world around them, they are opened to new experiences and a greater appreciation of their surroundings and of who they are. Using proper drawing supplies such as graded pencils and real drawing paper, will enable the students to appreciate the value of using proper tools for the job at hand. To help with our project, I am requesting 1 ink cartridge, 2 packs of photo paper, 1 pack of drawing paper, and 1 pack of pencils. The ink cartridge and photo paper will be used to print their photos and the paper and pencils will be used by the students to draw the missing half of their face.

Using self portraits will make the projects more personal and relevant.

Presently we use the most common pencils and copy paper to draw with which limits the students' ability to create a full range of values. By printing our own photos we can control the values and contrast in the photos, challenging the students to catch all the nuances (in values) of the portraits we print.
