Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Did you ever want to start a business? Balance your checkbook? File your taxes? Or buy a home? I have collected a number of free materials from different organizations to help students answer these questions about entrepreneurship, personal finance and economics. But we need a place to store them!

My students are incredibly talented and work hard to be successful in their academic efforts.

Over 40 percent of our students are on free and reduced meal (FARMs) plans. At some point in their academic careers, more than 70 percent of them have been on a similar FARMs meal plan. Many come from difficult family situations and school is the bedrock constant in their lives, an escape from what is going on at home. Finding ways to challenge them to learn about economics is where I see them come alive! They amaze me with their creativity, initiative and motivation to learn about creating a business, balancing their own checkbook or finding out how they can maintain a stellar credit score. But this takes resources.

My Project

Over the past 18 months, I have reached out to many different government agencies, nongovernmental organizations and corporate foundations to acquire copies of different materials on personal finance, entrepreneurship, macroeconomic concepts, microeconomic strategies and investing skills that will help my students succeed in the real world. The good news is that many of these places have sent us numerous materials to use in the classroom. And many of these materials are great resources for students to use in my classes each year, with four-color posters, graphic novels, scenarios and even related activities to help students with real-world applications. But we need a way to store all of these materials rather than the endless stacks of papers, pamphlets and handouts that are currently lining the walls of our classroom. These magazine rack holders will allow the students to organize these materials in sections they can easily access and use on a daily basis.

How did you learn about checking your credit score?

Or the importance of protecting your identity? This personal finance and entrepreneurship library will help students learn about these topics related to economics today by studying the subjects from many thought-leading institutions, government agencies, industry leaders; and all of this in some truly new and innovative ways. Please help us create this library that will help our students become the next Bill Gates or Steve Jobs. Will you help?
