My students need basics-- pencils, paper, and Kleenex-- in order to concentrate on their studies! As a public school teacher, I spend a lot of my own money on basic supplies.
My students learn best when they feel cared for and comfortable. It is hard to do this without the most basic supplies. Most of my students come from low-income homes, and unfortunately, they do not always come prepared for school. Every public school classroom should have some basic supplies.
My students are caring, responsible, passionate tenth graders.
In tenth grade English, we have read five books: "Buried Onions," "Persepolis," "If Beale Street Could Talk," "The Catcher in the Rye," and "Drown." We read every day in class, and thanks to DonorsChoose.org, I am building a classroom library of independent reading books.
My Project
My students use pencils and paper on a daily basis, and now that we are in the height of cold season in California, they need Kleenex! I want my students to have what they need, SO THAT they can concentrate on learning! My students have written brilliant persuasive essays on "Persepolis," created passionate poems about their own lives, and engaged in many text-based discussions. They are budding intellectuals--with runny noses!
These humble donations will sustain us through the rest of the year.
As a single mom and public school teacher, it is hard for me to buy these supplies on my own. While one might hope that a school or families could provide these basic supplies, we are a public school serving an under-resourced community.
