Pencils and Book Bags and Carriers, Oh My!!

My students need access to our classroom library, a way to take those books home to read, a place to store the books they've chosen, and we desperately need pencils!

My Students

My English class is the one place to introduce Spanish/French-speaking immersion students to the world of English literature, all in 90 minutes per day! We need good storage places for access to those books and pencils to write about them. My classroom is the only exposure to English they have.

My school is a K - 8 Spanish/French immersion school that has a high level of ELL students.

Our /high-poverty urban setting is just begging for good quality literature, in all three languages. Since I am the 4th grade English teacher, it is my responsibility to introduce them to English literature, grammar, and language arts. These students are willing and eager to learn. I have students reading on a pre-kindergarten level all the way to high school, and I must service all of these students daily. There are many "a-ha" moments throughout the day, as I teach 3 groups of 24 students per day. We read, write and discuss our daily lessons enthusiastically.

My Project

The current classroom library is very unorganized and difficult to find books on a certain topic. The students used to check out 3 books a week to take home and read, until I ran out of bags for them to use to carry the books in. There's limited space allocated for these books as well. The bags will enable them to carry books checked out home safely. The rolling cart and bins will help to organize the books into manageable categories. The book pockets will help keep their books in a safe place in the classroom (traveling classes have nowhere to put their materials). The pencils will allow the students to actually do their work. It's very hard to maintain supplies in such a high-poverty environment.

Currently, I have students doing work with crayons and markers.

The pencils will help in that area. The take-home bags will allow the books to travel safely from school to home and back without a lot of wear and tear on them. The rolling cart/bins will make the books easily accessible and easier to find a certain genre of book to read. The chair caddies will allow the students to keep their materials together in one place and provide easy access to their work, journals and assignments.
