it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Breaking News: After a solid year of eating nubs, the electric pencil sharpener finally snapped. It is on strike and refuses to go back to work until given long, slender wood to chew on. The pencil union is requiring nubs to picket with Post-It Notes until negotiations are settled.
Students in my class have been urging the electric sharpener to give up the nubs stashed deep within its belly.
The students, although persistent, cannot fix or use the sharpener at the present time. The Title 1 school that houses the pencil sharpener cannot coax the poverty-stricken neighborhood to spend any more $$$ on school supplies. 90% of the students already get free and reduced lunch. But my brilliant students have not given up hope. In fact, they are willing to work hard (like always) and help in picketing efforts. So they smile, pick up the nubs, and rally with the sharpener; hoping to get new resources.
My Project
The students have no choice but to help prepare picket signs and request back-up No. 2s. Negotiation efforts also include a request for pencil boxes, Post-It Notes, and hand-held sharpeners for those days when the electric one is moody.
The students' lives will be drastically changed when they can write legible letters without scuffing their knuckles on the paper. After picketing, the remaining Post-It Notes will be used for student input on Anchor Charts. Of course, the pencil boxes will keep the electric sharpener sane since it cannot see the hand-held sharpeners and extra No. 2s. (Shh... We are requesting a new electric sharpener as well.)
Students and sharpener need a break!
Picketing is tiring work. Negotiations cannot end without adequate writing utensils, storage, and small, sticky, paper squares. Hand-held backup sharpeners are a necessity on those days when the electric unit is unwilling to work. Please help this dire situation come to a close by donating to the NO NUBS campaign.
