Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My mission at our school as the school counselor is to make it a safe, happy place for students to learn on a daily basis. With the help of students and staff and our new Peaceful Ambassadors Peer Mediation program, we can continue to create a peaceful environment that is a wonderful place for all.
Fourth, fifth, and sixth grade students at my School have volunteered to be peacemakers on the playground and in the classroom.
They are undergoing Peer Mediation training and will be helping over 400 students at School solve conflicts on the playground by listening, facilitating, and mediating between students. In order to be spotted on the playground easily, the students will be required to wear fluorescent vests that show they are "On Duty" as part of the Peer Mediation program.
My School is a Title 1 School with a diverse population which would benefit greatly from a Peer Mediation program. This program will give both the student facilitators and participating students life skills that will be beneficial in class, at lunch, on the playground, at home, and in the community.
My Project
This Peer Mediation Program revolves around the idea that conflict is inevitable, and it is essential to find positive and non-violent solutions to problems. Students are brought together in a safe space to solve their own minor problems before they escalate, with the help of a student facilitator. Communication, accountability, and citizenship are key components, and these learned skills can be transferred into other areas of daily activities as well as benefiting the community as a whole.
The participating student facilitators must be easily recognized by other students that are out on the playground in need of help. Having colorful pinnies will create an environment where students feel safe in knowing there are peer mediators ready to help solve a conflict in a time of need. All of the "peace sign" materials will be used to facilitate Peace Days throughout the school year.
This program will make an amazing difference at our school because it will encourage peaceful interactions among students and staff, as well as promote positive rewards and awareness for good citizenship and behavior.
