My students need math journals to use at home with their parents to reinforce skills taught in class or to be challenged.

My Students

"Can you please send home extra work?" My parents often write me notes asking for material to practice at home with their student. With school cutbacks, getting extra copies to send home is expensive.

My students are from low economic homes and most are single parent homes.

I teach second grade. My students are learning the fundamentals to apply in the coming years. Most are below grade level or receive additional assistance such as Speech or Resource. I also have a few students that are above grade level. I work in a public school that is Title One.

My Project

I am requesting Daily Practice Journals in Language and Math. Parents can work daily for a short period of time on target skills needed in school. Each journal has 35 weeks of daily practice. The parents will have an answer key to check the answers. This time together working in the journals will build conversations between the parent(s) and student. It will also give the student a chance to improve skills or learn new material. The journals are for grades First through Third. This helps because students are often at different levels in the classroom.

Parents are students' first teachers.

These journals will help the parents by giving them a sense of investing in their student's learning. Parents will be able to gauge for themselves how well their student is learning. As a teacher, I feel students will improve because they will see their parents taking time to work with them and they can see for themselves how well they are improving by getting more and more problems correct. They will also see home and school working together.
