Overnight Field Trip Aboard the Tall Ship Balclutha

My project needs funding for an overnight class field trip aboard the tall ship, Balclutha, located at the Hyde Street Pier in San Francisco.

I am a 5th grade teacher at Ulloa Elementary (SF). While I truly love working with the children, parents, and staff at Ulloa, there are major financial limitations our school must continually deal with. Many of our students come from a low-income background and are unable to afford admission to any event or field trip that is not free of charge. This year, I have planned an amazing experience for my fifth graders. They will learn about (and simulate) the lives of sailors during the year 1906, right after the devastating San Francisco fire. Participating in an overnight field trip aboard the tall ship Balclutha, my students will be divided into five separate crews. They will be responsible for tasks such as cooking, knot tying, block and tackle rigging, and many other authentic duties required aboard a ship. My students will also need to learn a number of sea chanteys (songs), to keep bell time, and various nautical terms (i.e. Avast, Port, Starboard, All Hands). Not only will my students learn nautical vocabulary and tasks, they will have (for many) their first opportunity to spend a night away from home. Additionally, I really appreciate how this field trip stresses the importance of teamwork, responsibility, building self-esteem, and overall cooperative learning skills--something I stress in my classroom each and every day. As my students prepare to move onto their challenging middle school years, I would love to be able to provide them with this engaging, outside-of-the-classroom experience that will hopefully create a memory to last a lifetime!
