Students come and go all day in our library. We are a school of enthusiastic readers. They rush in in the morning to return last night's books, and check out new ones for the day!
We are a middle school full of students who love to read.
However, many of the students have particular books they want to read, and they are always looking for their favorite "section." Unfortunately, in the fiction area, there were no sections, the books were arranged by author. So when students were looking for something like scary books, they often just left the library instead of going to the catalog and finding who wrote those. They didn't like that extra step! So to get our students to read even more, and especially to pull in those reluctant readers, we rearranged the fiction section this fall and divided up all the fiction books into seven genres. Now our students are reading even more, and we're seeing new students in the library who did not used to come in very frequently. They are now even able to head to their favorite section, find an appealing book, and check out between classes! Circulation is up, and more students are reading.
My Project
However, we are finding that our reluctant readers are attracted to two sections in particular: horror and sports. We have lots of scary stories, but our sports section is the smallest section in the library. Not only is it the smallest, it is tiny! It is only a third the size of the next smallest section. Out of our 3500 fiction books, only 103 of them are in the sports section! So now that we finally have reluctant readers coming into the library to check out a book they can easily find and want to read, we don't even have much to offer them! We need to fix this problem so we don't lose their new-found enthusiasm.
We would really like to offer more sports books to our reluctant readers so that they will have something to look forward to and will come into the library and start reading.
Sports books are an important gateway into the world of reading. Now that we have identified this gaping hole in our collection, we would like to buy 50 new and exciting sports books to offer to our students. The students are coming into the library to read sports books. Let's not let them leave empty-handed!
