Reading and research. These two principles guide my vision for developing our school library collection. In the library, I want to foster a genuine love of reading in students and also encourage them to research, investigate and explore topics of interest independently.
My students are bright, inquisitive learners.
They love coming to the library, whether it is on their own during "free time" or with their class to work on a project. They also love learning about topics of interest and local history, as evidenced by a recent project some of our 7th graders just completed on the history of our town. As they were working on this project, their teacher and I realized the library was very lacking in resources on local history. Knowing that my students love to read books about odd and unusual historical facts, I decided to expand our collection by seeking out some titles on little-known historical information about our local area and our state.
My Project
These materials will add a much-needed local flavor to our school library collection. Additionally, they will spark student interest because they relate to odd, unusual and supernatural historical stories and folklore, which even the most reluctant readers tend to enjoy. Students will be able to hone their skills in reading nonfiction text and conducting research while also discovering that they can read nonfiction for enjoyment as well as to find information.
With a school-wide priority on nonfiction text analysis, these materials will be very popular with students and teachers alike and should circulate quickly throughout the school.
By getting students to learn about and appreciate local and state history and folklore, students will feel a sense of pride in their hometown and the place they come from.
They will connect this back to their learning in the classroom and in the library, and will be inspired to dig deeper and learn more on their own. These materials will capture student imaginations, leading them to become the independent, thoughtful researchers we want them to be.
