"The man who doesn't read good books has no advantage over the man who can't read them." Mark Twain Our biggest challenge in getting students to embrace reading as a lifelong love is to open the world of experiences and possibilities novels bestow. Each day at Carvers Bay begins with reading.
A very high percentage of our students come from a rural, minority background in the low country of South Carolina.
If our students work hard and matriculate to higher education they are often the first in their family who have pursued education after high school. When inspired, our students value their education. They rise above the poverty they have grown up in and excel in life's pursuits. We are a small school of under 500 students. Though small in number our quality continues to increase each year.
My students need basic supplies such as 50 Corrugate Tri-Folds, a classpack of Construction Paper and an Electric Pencil Sharpener for a major project focused on creating a literary analysis of a student selected novel. We cal Students will use the materials requested to help them prepare a visually pleasing display and present our "Museum of Literature." The only limit to this assignment is their imagination! The student’s task is to work selecting a novel to read and present to an audience.. Each component must be explained in the individual oral presentation. Each student will assemble, display, and give a guided tour of their exhibit. Each student will present an oral presentation which be live and include a variety of components. These include: Essential quotes, a source bibliography, perfect passages, visual representations, a computer component, an artistic representation, vocabulary and music. All related to their chosen novel. This fun project allows students to delve deeply into a novel and learn application of techniques rather then simply reading and responding to assessments.
Donations of this material will provide students with essential tools for processing, challenging and involving learning through individual performance tasks.
Since this is usually the first time many of our students have read and analyzed a significant work of fiction it will present them with the ability to read and understand future material with ease. I have seen how this project opens even the most challenging of students eyes to the possibilities their future holds.
