My Students

Fantasy books give readers hope for tomorrow and hope to keep reading. There is something about the theme of good versus evil that can hook into readers' imaginations like no other genre. They are magic!

I currently teach 31 fabulous fourth graders who's reading levels range from way below grade level to way above grade level.

Their reading skills may vary, but their love for reading does not - they ALL love to read. I've intentionally chosen book titles that are the first in a series to hook my readers to read on.

My Project

My students will be able to read together in book clubs with books at their own reading level. They will be able to discuss their books and learn along side of the character in their book and help each other navigate the complex plots. Not only will they become better readers, they will also become better people. They will learn to never give up, to trust themselves, and to learn from their mistakes.

Fantasy books are not just about what happens in the story, but also the underlying themes and life lessons.

Our quest for fantasy books is also our quest to become better than we are. Just like the characters in our books learn, my students will learn that the struggle against injustice is always worth it, that real powers are within us (courage and compassion), and that even the smallest among us can effect what happens in the world.
