Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our Kindergarten classroom would like the opportunity to produce our very own reality show!
Our class is located in a small neighborhood school in central California.
We are a public high poverty school, with the majority of the students receiving free or reduced price meals at school. The families I serve are hard-working folks who want the best for their children. While we speak only English in our classroom, many of the children speak Spanish or Punjabi at home. The children have living situations as varied as they are. Some students live in nuclear families, some with single parents, others with foster parents, and still others in multifamily homes. We have military families in our classroom, in addition to firefighters, and oilfield workers. While we are a mainstream classroom, there are students with Autism, ADHD, and speech/language delays who call our room home. Although we come from varied backgrounds and cultures, we stand united in our desire to learn.
My Project
There are so many misconceptions about life in Kindergarten and we feel a short video might help to enlighten folks. We would like the opportunity to show how we collaborate to solve complex problems, practice literacy skills using technology, and record how the golden thread of fun is woven throughout our day! The addition of various camera mounts will allow us to fully utilize the small GoPro camera we currently have. For example, with the head strap mount, we can attach our video camera to the head of a student and record his/her day. A grip mount will allow the camera to easily attach to one of our tricycles as it speeds around our track. With these mounts, you can see the world through the eyes of a child! The 64 gig SD card will help us record up to 9 hours of footage, while the USB cable will allow us to transfer video to our computer for editing. Various filters and mounting hardware will ensure we get just the right camera angle, while a case will help us keep everything saf
This project has the potential to help so many.
In addition to being a wonderful souvenir, our video footage could help new students feel more at ease, provide real world discussions about social conflicts, and help us document what we are doing well. Furthermore, these video clips can also serve as a valuable teaching tool. After seeing ourselves, we can collaborate to improve our classroom, our school, and our world.
