Our Kindergarteners Are in Need of AR Books!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

First they learn their letter sounds, then they blend those sounds together, and then they begin reading. But what happens when you have a class full of Kindergarteners ready to read, but unfortunately cannot fill their hands with an appropriately leveled book?

Our Full Day Kindergarten class is at a Title 1 school located in a high-poverty urban area.

About 90% of our students are Dual Language Learners and all are receiving free breakfast and lunch. Although they may face struggles at home, and are low performing right now, they are a hard working group of students that are eager to learn and excited about reading.

My Project

These AR books will be used for guided reading instruction as well as independently read by students throughout the school day. The books are at a variety of levels so every student will have access to a book that is just right for them. As they become stronger readers, they will continue reading books that gradually become more difficult for them. The titles are diverse, fun and engaging which will encourage students to maintain a love of reading. Students will be able to test on these AR books and once they have passed 25 tests they will advance to the first grade reading level. They will be awarded in front of the entire school and be celebrated for their academic achievement. With the exposure to these texts, they will also become stronger writers. They will gain experience with new vocabulary and correct sentence structure. During "Author's Chair" time they can apply this new knowledge by writing about their favorite book, favorite part, favorite characters,etc.

Because these books will rotate among 8 different Kinder classrooms at our school, donations to this project will impact the lives of over 130 low-income students.

These books will help build our classroom libraries and encourage our students to become strong and independent readers as well as better writers with bigger vocabularies! The ability to read and write on grade level will open doors for these students and set them up for success.
