My students have fallen in love with the game of chess. They practice at home, at school, and even in their sleep. They are excited about this opportunity to go to another National Chess Tournament, this time in Atlanta, Georgia.
The students are in a major urban center in a high needs Title I school.
Many of the students in the school are English Language Learners. The chess students are excited and curious about chess. Most of them have been playing for three years now, and they have become very skilled at the game. Chess has also enhanced their cognitive development and greatly improved their math skills. They have also learned patience, developed stamina, improved their interpersonal skills, and worked on their ability to articulate their thoughts and ideas to other players and to teachers. Chess has increased their ability to think through difficult situations and arrive at an appropriate decision.
My Project
The students will use these materials for the trip to the National High School Chess Tournament in Atlanta, Georgia. The Hyatt, where they will be staying, is also where the tournament will take place. The funding will also provide them with three healthy meals a day. The students will compete in all seven rounds of the tournament over three days, and hopefully be able to take in a little sightseeing of the city as well. As the students compete with chess players from all over the nation, they will use their skills that they have developed to their advantage.
Donations to this project will inspire the students to become even better chess players.
Playing against the best students in the nation makes my students want to succeed even more to prove to their friends, families, and themselves that they have the skills to compete effectively in chess at the national level. Students will use this experience to catapult them to bigger and better things in the future and may even end up with a college scholarship.
